Desserts...

You are bound to have a sweet tooth among the set of 32 teeth that are in your mouth. This is why no meal is complete without something to satisfy that sweet tooth. Desserts are the best part of the meal for most of us as they provide the finishing touch to any exquisite meal. Originating from the French word “desservir” meaning cleaning the table, desserts are actually meant to be served at the end of a meal. To have fruits and nuts at the end of a meal has been a long time tradition but formalized desserts are a relatively new concept that has sprung up in our times. Ice-cream, cakes, pastries, custards, puddings and pies are some of the most common types of desserts served around the world.

In the years before the 19th century desserts were a privilege that only the aristocrats of the time could enjoy. It was only after the development of the sugar industry that desserts found their way into the homes of the common man and that too on special holiday occasions or celebrations. After further mechanization of the sugar industry the price of producing and consequently purchasing sugar greatly declined. In this way desserts became a part of our daily cuisine. From normal everyday desserts to exquisite holiday desserts many new forms of sweet dish have developed as a result of trial and experimentation.

Restaurants have cashed in on this trend by offering different kinds of desserts which people are bound to buy after the meal that they consume. Desserts often incorporate seasonal fruits with other items. In fact many joints have opened up that specialize in producing desserts only. People come into such shops to feast on desserts. In our homes however anything sweet that follows a regular meal is known as the dessert. The French concept of cleaning the table has become a popular trend through out the world.
